The Century-Old Thrill of Old Maid

Old Maid is one of the most recognizable and universally played card games in the world. Dating back to the Victorian era and sharing ancestry with continental European games such as Germany's Schwarzer Peter (Black Peter) and France's Vieux Garçon, Old Maid blends anticipation, probability, and lighthearted bluffing. Players race to discard pairs while nervously attempting to pass the unmatchable lone Queen to their rivals.

How to Play Old Maid: Official Rules

  1. Deck Setup & Deal: A standard 52-card deck is used with one Queen removed (leaving 51 cards total). Because one Queen is missing, three Queens remain in play: two can form a pair, leaving one lone Queen as the "Old Maid". All 51 cards are dealt as evenly as possible to the four players.
  2. Opening Pair Discards: Before regular play begins, all players inspect their starting hands and automatically discard all existing pairs of equal rank (e.g. two 8s, two Kings, two Queens) face-up into the center discards.
  3. Blind Card Drawing: On your turn, you draw one random card face-down from the hand of the player to your left (West). If the card you draw forms a pair with any card already in your hand, both cards are immediately discarded to the center pile!
  4. Turn Rotation: If the drawn card does not make a pair, it joins your hand. Play moves clockwise: West draws from North, North draws from East, and East draws from you (South).
  5. Winning & The Old Maid: When a player successfully discards their last card, they are safe and win! Play continues among the remaining players until all 25 pairs are completed and only one player is left holding the lone Old Maid Queen—that player loses the round!

Top Tips for Surviving Old Maid

Tip 1: Shuffle Your Hand Regularly

When you find yourself holding the Old Maid Queen, do not leave it in the exact same spot in your hand! Opponents often try to guess where a bad card might be based on where you placed it. Keeping your cards rearranged makes it harder for rivals to predict your hand.

Tip 2: Notice Card Placement Habits

Pay attention to where opponents place newly drawn cards. If an opponent draws a card, does not make a pair, and tucks it into the center or corner of their hand, that card might be the Old Maid!

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cards does each player start with? +
With 51 cards distributed among 4 players, three players receive 13 cards and one player receives 12 cards.
Can three of a kind be discarded? +
No. In Old Maid, only pairs of two matching cards can be discarded. If you hold three 5s, you discard two as a pair and keep the third 5 in your hand until you draw the fourth 5.
How is the loser determined? +
There are 25 total pairs in the 51-card deck. Once all 25 pairs have been discarded, the last player remaining holding the lone Queen is the Old Maid and loses the game.
