The Timeless Mastery of Hearts: A Trick-Taking Legend
Hearts is one of the most famous and psychologically nuanced trick-taking card games ever created. Emerging from the 18th-century French game Reversis, Hearts evolved into a staple of casual card play and computer operating systems worldwide. Unlike Bridge or Spades where players strive to capture as many tricks as possible, Hearts is fundamentally an evasion game: players strategically dump dangerous high cards and dodge penalty points.

How to Play Hearts: Official Rules
- Dealing & Passing: A standard 52-card deck is dealt equally among 4 players (13 cards each). At the start of each round, players select 3 cards to pass according to the rotation: Round 1 to the Left, Round 2 to the Right, Round 3 Across the table, and Round 4 Hold (no passing).
- The First Trick: The player holding the Two of Clubs (2♣) must lead it to start the first trick. Other players must follow suit with Clubs if they have one. On the first trick, no penalty cards (Hearts or the Queen of Spades) may be played!
- Following Suit: You must always follow the suit that was led if you possess at least one card in that suit. If you are void in the led suit, you may discard ("sluff") any card in your hand, including high Hearts or the Queen of Spades.
- Winning the Trick: The highest card of the suit that was originally led wins the trick. The winner collects the 4 cards and leads the next trick.
- Breaking Hearts: You cannot lead a Heart until Hearts have been "broken"—meaning a player who was unable to follow suit played a Heart on an earlier trick, or the player has only Hearts left in hand.
- Scoring & Shooting the Moon: Each Heart taken in a trick awards 1 penalty point. The Queen of Spades (the Black Maria) awards a crushing 13 penalty points! However, if a single player captures ALL 13 Hearts AND the Queen of Spades (all 26 points), they score 0 points while every opponent receives 26 points!

Expert Strategies for Winning Hearts
Strategy 1: Pass the Dangerous Spades
The Ace and King of Spades are exceptionally dangerous because whoever leads a Spade will likely draw out your Ace or King, leaving you vulnerable to catching the Queen of Spades on that very trick! If you hold the Ace or King of Spades without holding plenty of low Spades for protection, pass them away.
Strategy 2: Short-Suit Yourself
Passing away all cards of a single suit (often Diamonds or Clubs) creates an immediate void. As soon as that suit is led in the opening tricks, you can safely discard high face cards, dangerous Hearts, or the Queen of Spades!
Strategy 3: Watch for Moon Shooters
If one player is aggressively winning tricks containing high Hearts and high Spades early in the round, be alert! Do not dump your remaining low Hearts on them; instead, win a trick with a safe card or sacrifice a Queen to break their streak and prevent them from shooting the moon.
