How to Play Nova Snake

1. Start moving

Press an arrow key, a WASD key, tap the on-screen D-pad, or swipe on the board. The snake begins moving automatically on your first input.

2. Eat food to grow

Guide the snake onto a food dot to eat it. Each piece adds to your score and makes the snake one segment longer.

3. Avoid crashing

In most modes, the run ends if the snake hits a wall, runs into its own body, or collides with an obstacle. Turn on Wrap-around walls in Settings to pass through edges instead of dying.

4. Grab bonus food

Colored food items appear alongside normal food: golden food for big points, and special items that double your score, slow time, boost your speed, shield you from one hit, or shrink your tail. Check the Legend card for colors.

5. Level up

Every few pieces of food raises your level, which gradually increases speed and (if obstacles are enabled) adds more rocks to dodge.

6. Beat your best

Your score, longest snake, and survival time are saved automatically. Chase a higher grade, more stars, and a spot on the local leaderboard.

Tips & Strategies

🎯 Plan two moves ahead

Think about where your tail will be, not just where your head is. A turn that looks safe now can trap you a second later once the tail catches up.

🌀 Hug the edges early, open space late

When the snake is short, edges and corners are fine. As it grows, move toward the center of the board where you have more escape routes on every side.

🔗 Chain food for combo points

Eating food quickly in succession builds a combo bonus. If two pieces are close together, grab them back-to-back before the combo window resets.

🥇 Prioritize golden and shield food

Golden food is worth far more than regular food, and shield food absorbs one crash. Both are usually worth a short detour, especially in Hard or Expert mode.

🐢 Use slow-motion food defensively

Save slow-motion pickups for tight, obstacle-heavy sections of the board rather than grabbing them the instant they appear.

🧱 Learn the obstacle pattern

In Expert and Extreme difficulty, some obstacles move. Watch one full pass before committing to a route through them.

🧘 Practice in Zen mode

Zen mode removes fail states, so it's a low-pressure way to learn steering, timing, and food patterns before testing them in Classic or Survival.

⏱️ Sacrifice length for time in Time Attack

In the 60-second Time Attack mode, grabbing several small foods on an efficient path often beats a risky detour for one big bonus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an internet connection to play?

No. Nova Snake is a single self-contained file that runs entirely in your browser. Once the page is loaded, it works fully offline.

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Your high score, lifetime statistics, achievements, and local leaderboard are saved in your browser's storage on this device. Clearing your browser data will reset them.

What's the difference between the game modes?

Classic ends on any wall, self, or obstacle hit. Endless is a relaxed, ongoing run. Time Attack gives you 60 seconds to score as much as possible. Challenge ramps up difficulty faster. Survival emphasizes staying alive as long as possible. Zen removes fail states entirely. Daily Challenge is a fixed 90-second run you can try once per day.

What do the different colored food items do?

Red is standard food. Gold is worth a large bonus. Purple items either double your score or grant a one-hit shield. Blue slows the game down briefly, the accent-colored item speeds it up, orange pulls food toward you, and gray shrinks your tail. The Legend card in the side panel shows each color.

Why did my snake die even though I turned in time?

Movement is grid-based and updates on a fixed timer shown by your current speed. If a turn is entered a moment after the last grid step, it will apply on the next step rather than instantly. Slower speed settings give more reaction time.

Can I play without a keyboard?

Yes. On touch devices, use the on-screen directional pad below the board or swipe in the direction you want to move. Every button is also reachable and operable with a keyboard and screen reader.

How do I turn off obstacles or enable wrap-around walls?

Open Settings from the header (gear icon) to toggle obstacles, wrap-around walls, grid size, high contrast, reduced motion, and more.

The game feels too easy or too hard — how do I adjust it?

Use the Difficulty selector in the header for overall challenge (Easy through Extreme), and the Speed selector for a separate pace adjustment on top of that.
