About the game

What Is a Jigsaw Puzzle?

A jigsaw puzzle is a picture that has been cut into interlocking pieces which must be reassembled into the original image. Piecewise brings that same tactile, satisfying experience to your browser as a free online jigsaw puzzle game, using HTML5 Canvas to cut every picture into uniquely shaped, tab-and-blank interlocking pieces — no two puzzles ever look quite the same. Instead of a coffee table and a box lid, you get a zoomable digital board, a scrollable piece tray, and smart tools like hints and a ghost-image overlay to help when you get stuck.

Because everything runs on vanilla JavaScript and Canvas, Piecewise loads quickly, works fully offline after the first visit, and plays equally well with a mouse, a trackpad, or a touchscreen. Whether you want a two-minute break with a nine-piece beginner puzzle or a weekend project with a 225-piece grand master picture, there is a difficulty tier built for you.

A Short History of Jigsaw Puzzles

Jigsaw puzzles date back to the 1760s, when European mapmakers mounted maps on wood and cut them along country borders to create educational teaching tools for geography lessons. The name comes from the fretsaw — once called a "jig saw" — that was used to cut the intricate wooden shapes. Cardboard puzzles became affordable and popular in the twentieth century, and today the format has moved seamlessly into browsers and mobile apps, letting anyone play a full puzzle game without buying a physical box or worrying about a lost piece.

Why it's good for you

Benefits of Puzzle Games

Beyond entertainment, regularly solving jigsaw puzzles is a well-documented form of light cognitive exercise. Fitting pieces together by shape and color trains pattern recognition, strengthens short-term visual memory, and encourages a calm, focused state that many players find genuinely relaxing after a busy day — similar to how some people use guided breathing or journaling to unwind.

Working through a puzzle also builds logical thinking and planning skills: successful solvers learn to sort pieces by edge, color, and pattern before attempting placement, then test and revise their approach as the picture takes shape. For children in Kids Mode, larger and simpler pieces build fine motor coordination and an early sense of achievement. For adults, higher-piece-count puzzles in Hard, Expert, Master, and Grand Master tiers offer a satisfying long-form challenge that rewards patience over speed.

Concentration, Memory, and Stress Relief

Because a jigsaw puzzle has one clear goal and no time pressure in Relax Mode, it is an easy way to practice sustained attention without the anxiety that can come with fast-paced games. Many players use Piecewise as a screen break that still feels productive: a finished picture is visible proof of focused effort, and the built-in Daily Challenge gives that sense of accomplishment a reason to return every day.

Puzzle Categories & Difficulty Levels

Piecewise organizes its 1,000 campaign levels into seven progressive difficulty tiers, each unlocked in order as you complete the previous one. Beginner puzzles (levels 1–100) use 3×3, nine-piece boards with unlimited hints and large, easy-to-grip pieces — perfect for warming up or introducing a child to their first digital jigsaw puzzle. Easy puzzles (levels 101–250) step up to 4×4, sixteen-piece boards with an optional ghost image. Medium puzzles (levels 251–500) move to 6×6, thirty-six-piece boards with more detailed artwork and fewer hints. Hard puzzles (levels 501–750) reach 8×8, sixty-four pieces with limited assistance and bonus scoring for efficient play.

Expert puzzles (levels 751–900) use 10×10, one-hundred-piece boards featuring images with more similar colors, a faster timer and fewer hints. Master puzzles (levels 901–980) jump to 12×12, one-hundred-forty-four pieces requiring precision placement and rewarding advanced scoring. Finally, Grand Master puzzles (levels 981–1000) are 15×15, two-hundred-twenty-five-piece ultra-detailed challenges with no ghost image and the game's biggest rewards and rarest achievements. Every tier draws from more than thirty rotating picture categories — Nature, Animals, Birds, Flowers, Mountains, Beaches, Forests, Waterfalls, Space, Galaxy, Planets, Cars, Motorcycles, Architecture, World Landmarks, Castles, Cities, Food, Fruits, Sports, Abstract Art, Cartoons, Fantasy, Ocean Life, Dinosaurs, a dedicated Kids Collection, and seasonal sets for Christmas, Halloween, New Year, Easter and Festivals — so the campaign never feels repetitive.
