What Is Emoji Match?

Emoji Match is a memory-matching card game: a grid of face-down cards hides pairs of identical emoji, and the goal is to flip two cards at a time until every pair has been found. It's the classic "Concentration" card game reskinned with expressive, colorful emoji instead of playing cards, which makes it instantly readable for players of any age and any reading level. This version adds a 1,000-level campaign, daily and weekly challenges, power-ups, and a full progression system on top of that simple core loop.

History of Memory Matching Games

Matching-pairs games predate video games by centuries — variations of "Concentration" or "Pelmanism" were played with ordinary decks of cards long before computers existed, built entirely around the same principle: information you glimpse briefly must be held in short-term memory and recalled later. When personal computers arrived, memory-match was one of the first genres to be digitized because it needed almost no processing power, only a way to track which cards a player had already seen. Its move to mobile and browser play kept the format essentially unchanged for the same reason chess rules haven't changed in centuries — the core mechanic was already close to perfect.

How to Play

Flip any face-down card to reveal its emoji, then flip a second card. If the two match, they stay face-up and count toward your progress. If they don't match, both flip back down after a brief pause, and it's your job to remember what you saw for next time. Clear every pair on the board to complete the level, ideally before the timer, move limit, or life count (depending on mode) runs out.

Emoji Categories

Cards are drawn from fifteen categories — Smileys, Animals, Food, Sports, Vehicles, Nature, Space, Music, Gaming, Education, Love, Celebration, Awards, Fantasy, and Puzzle Icons — so the board never feels repetitive, and you can pick a favorite category from the Theme panel or let the game mix them for extra variety.

Game Modes

Campaign — 1,000 hand-tuned levels across seven difficulty tiers, from a gentle 2×2 introduction to a full Grandmaster gauntlet.

Endless — boards keep coming, each slightly harder than the last, until you choose to stop.

Daily Challenge — one shared board per day, the same for every player, for comparing your best time.

Weekly Challenge and Monthly Tournament — longer-running events with bigger rewards.

Survival — a wrong match costs a life; run out of lives and the round ends.

Speed Match — a tight timer rewards fast, confident recall over cautious guessing.

Memory Marathon — progressively larger boards back-to-back in one long session.

Relax Mode — no timer, no penalty, just matching at your own pace.

Kids Mode — smaller boards, generous hints, and gentle categories for younger players.

Practice — a no-stakes sandbox for trying any board size or category.

Campaign Levels

The 1,000-level campaign is organized into seven tiers: Beginner (1–100) on a tiny 2×2 board with unlimited time and hints; Easy (101–250) stepping up to 4×4 with a basic timer and combo bonuses; Medium (251–500) on a 6×6 board with occasional card movement and less time; Hard (501–750) on a full 8×8 board with brief hidden-emoji flashes and limited hints; Expert (751–900) adding animated and rotated cards plus decoys; Master (901–980) with a fast timer and a strict move limit; and Grandmaster (981–1000), the hardest layouts in the game with the richest rewards.

Power-Ups

Ten power-ups are available to buy with coins or gems and use strategically: Reveal Cards, Freeze Timer, Extra Time, Auto Match, Hint, Undo, Double XP, Double Coins, Shuffle Board, and Mistake Shield (which cancels the penalty from your next wrong match). Save them for boards that are genuinely giving you trouble rather than spending them on easy early levels.

Combo System

Matching pairs back-to-back without a miss builds a combo multiplier that boosts the score and XP from every following match, so a clean run through a board is worth noticeably more than the same result with a few wrong guesses mixed in. A single miss resets the combo, which is exactly what makes Speed Match and Survival modes feel tense in the best way.

Scoring System

Each correct match awards base points modified by your current combo multiplier, remaining time, and board difficulty; a perfect, fast, high-combo clear earns the maximum three-star rating on a campaign level, while a slower or messier clear still completes the level but with fewer stars and rewards.

Daily & Weekly Challenges

A new Daily Challenge board unlocks every day, generated from the date so everyone sees the same layout, and a Weekly Challenge rotates on a longer cycle with bigger XP and coin rewards. Both feed into your login streak and several matching-focused achievements.
